Also it say thunderbolt ignition, what is that. I think the pull start rope must be broke cause i cant find it lol. any help is appreciated."

"Small Merc's of the last

"Small Merc's of the last 40'ish years used 4 different ignition systems.

There was a type 1 (Phelon, with points) and then the 3 Thunderbolt ignitions.

Thunderbolt 2 was the earliest and still had points. Thunderbolt 3 was there move away from points to electronic and Thunderbolt 4 (was when they finally got the product they were hoping for).

Your model has a T 4 ignition system, which has remained as the "standard" on Merc motors for the past 30 years or so (until very recently).

Does your model also have an electric start? Someone may have simply got rid of the rope start (can't imagine why though) and used the electric if equipped."

Im not sure if its an electric

Im not sure if its an electric start but right below where the pull start cord should be (there is a hole like it was there at one time) is a white button that can be depressed but nothing happens when i press it. from looking at the table posted by JB it appears that this motor is from 1976. would it be worth my time and money having it repaired of just get a new motor. thanks for the fast responses.

It was a decent model in it&#3

It was a decent model in it's time and does have a "modern" ignition.

You have to put the repair cost against the cost of a new replacement.

A new 20 will run you what? 2500 to 3000 bucks depending on who/how fancy.

If there isn't much wrong with this one you may have it on the water for a couple of hundred...
