El question I have done a little research someone said reverse lock doesnt work unless it's trim down the whole way is this true?

There is a big difference between the Volvo Penta AQ outdrives and Mercruisers. Most of the VP have electric power tilt, not hydraulic power trim. This means the outdrive must be compeletely lowererd so that the pawl can catch on the trim pin so that reverse can be engaged. The only times you would use the power tilt is for "beaching" or to go very slow ahead in shallow water. If you try to use the power tilt as power trim you may bend the tilt rod and in some cases (if the clutch does not work) you may even damage the electric power tilt gears.
