"Ok, now that I have your atte

"Ok, now that I have your attention. I keep reading in the manual for my evinrude 150 about this Ignition analyzer from kit # 434017, which i know has a crossref number for a CDI one, now my question is exactly what type or analyzer is it and can you use a different type of test tool to accomplish the same thing when you are checking the timing or resetting it? IE.. does it measure resisitance at certain point or voltage or what? I mean what is so special about this tool that the manual says you have to use it? What exactly is it measuring? Here where all this comes from. Just rebuilt the carbs on my 1996 Evin 150 intruder, cleaned out gas tank running good fuel and oil pump seem to be working just fine when i drain the carbs the fuel that comes out is a nice blue in color, I noticed lastnight when trying to figure out why it wont stay on at an idle that the number 1 cylinder seems to loose spark after about 10-15 seconds and the motor dies, gonna check power pack today but could that be it? I mean it fires up time after time for 10 -15 secs then the timing lite seems to slowly go dead when checking it then quits and the engine dies. Should I just try swapping out Power packs? I got a new spare lying around. Thought from the pros????"

"the box,..plugs in to the tim

"the box,..plugs in to the timing sensor, and allows u to set LS & HS timing,w/eng OFF..it is a mandatory toolin my opinion for servicing the OIS ignitions...if u have a known good pack, install it...if u choose to do your service wk,...get u a factory service manual, and the ignition analyzer,so u can set it up properly.,make sure your timing wheel is not loose, and i would make sure that sensor is not loose also, and that it passes the tests for it as well."

"Ok, that helps me out a ton J

"Ok, that helps me out a ton JWB, now when you say the sensor is not loose you mean the timing sensor under the timing wheel ontop of the flywheel right? As for a service manual does a SELOC service manual count as a factory manual in you opinion? That is where I keep reading about this tool. So you are not sure exactly what it is measuring JWB? I ask because I have tons of tools in my shop to include various ignition module testers and stuff was just wondering if there was a way to measure the same thing with a different instrument?"

"i dont know buddy,if u could

"i dont know buddy,if u could adapt another tester,i just use the factory one.by factory,i am referring to a john/evinrude factory service manual....the other books do not near go into enuf detail...."

"Hmmm, well I just got done sw

"Hmmm, well I just got done swapping out the power pack and for some strange reason the engine seems to want to run just fine now...lol.... I didnt mess with the timing at all. I did notice that when I put the timing light on the #1 cylinder and the engine running it was running at about 8 degrees ATDC not exactly where it should be right? SHould be about 6....any suggestions? Why cant these things be like old truck engines where you just loosen a screw and retard it just a hair to get it right...lol...."

"Another quick thought JWB, si

"Another quick thought JWB, since it does seem to be off just a bit on timing would it be safe to replace the timing sensor, and cover assy for good measure? I mean the eingine fires right up now and idles at about 1k out of the water on a flushy, but still has an occasional miss it seems while it is running. Any thoughts would be great...."

"if u r not familiar,w how out

"if u r not familiar,w how outboards sound on a flushette,u may be mistaking some sounds,for a miss...other than that,..put it togther and run it....anytime i chg a pack,i ck the timimg,"

"Right on with the sounds. I d

"Right on with the sounds. I did check the timing with a light on the #1 cylinder and it shows up at 8 degrees ATDC the manual says is should be around 6 Degrees, is 8 to far from where it should be?"

Or are you saying that I shoul

Or are you saying that I should take it out and run it at the lake before I do any other timing replacemt parts?

"u r seeing idle 'pick-up

"u r seeing idle 'pick-up ' timing,...the hs timing is the one to be concerned w/EXCEPT.on the OIS system, that is how u set idle speed, along w/link and sync....yes,.take it out and run it,..and see how it does.."
