" I have an old Johnson(40

" I have an old Johnson(40hp.)that I am trying to identify.I got it from my father and the I.D.tag was gone when he got it.(the spot for the tag is between and just above the transom bolts)Dad thinks the dealer he got it from said it was a 1968 but he can't remember for sure. The engine cover has decals rather than metal insignia plates. The top half of the engine cover is white, from there to the bottom of the leg is a dark green colour. It has manual shift, manual choke and electric start. This motor had just been completely rebuilt(0 hrs.)when Dad got it and he only put a few hours on it so it is still in really good shape. The local dealer says that it cannot be identified by the core plug number(#C0556134)alone.I really would like to find out the year, model so I can do some tune-up,wiring and restoration work on it. Thanks for any and all help or advice anyone can supply me with. "

" Doug.... The paint combo design of white/green ran fom 1968 to 1969, the white being "Artic White" OMC #172745, and the green being "Forest Green" OMC #172746 (This was/is a dark green).

However there was also a plain "Green" used in 1969/1971 OMC #172747 and again in 1976 OMC #173027 (I'm not sure of the shade of this green). There was also a "Tropic Green" used for a short while but that was a light green so we can count that out.

All of these engines incorporated an electric choke/manual choke setup. Some had a heat assisted choke setup with a tube running from the carb back to the powerhead exhaust manifold. If your engine has no electric choke, I would suspect that originally it was a manual start model and had a electric start kit added later on.

The 1968 to 1970 40hp models had a external exhaust housing cover attached with many philip head screws (the area between the powerhead and the lower unit). In 1971, the design was changed so that the 40hp looked more like the old 35hp models that were manufactured back in 1957/58.

If your engine has the external exhaust cover and has a heavy duty rubber tube leading from the inner exhaust housing to the external cover which is a main water outlet.... then I would strongly suspect that your engine is one of the 1968/1969 models. It doesn't matter which as both were identical. "

Joe Reeves THANK YOU for

Joe Reeves THANK YOU for all the info.Could you tell me where I might get an electric choke and what the installation entails. The heavy rubber hose between the inner and outer housings is a collapsible(accordian)type piece. If you dont mind I may call on you for additional information as I try to learn more about this engine. "Doug.... If your carb is indeed the original type carb for a manual start 40hp, which was later converted to a electric start model, there is no way that a choke assy can be added to it (unless the float chamber had the proper base for the solenoid, and you could find all the necessary items). However, if you have a digital camera or a scanner... some way to get a few clear pictures of your carburetor to me, I'd see what I can do for you.
