Need help with fuel problem on a 1989 Evinrude 40 hp vro

"at full throttle, my boat only goes about 10 mph. checked compression , 135 to 139, have been told it could be the fuel pump. told to test by using motor flusher, crank engine, put in foreward gear at half throttle than squeeze fuel bulb and hold,engine rpms will increase, did it and it worked. could it be something other than new fuel pump?"

"do you have spark on both cylenders.
also you should not run the engine in gear while on flusher,it can cause serious damage.
it needs to be under normal operating conditions.
if you did squeeze primer bulb and got that response from the engine it is a good indacation,that you do need a fuel pump."

"Half throttle on the flusher is going to peg the tach! It's always best to test on the water if possible. With no load on the prop, it's difficult to run tests that include throttling up above idle.

If the fuel bulb is not being sucked flat, the two options remaining are an air leak in the fuel line or a failing pump. Is the vro oil injection hooked up? If so, and the motor smokes excessivly it's most likely an air leak."

"Make sure that you check the crankcase for gas in the oil. If there is, it's definitely the fuel pump. My Evinrude had the same symptoms due to a hole in the fuel pump diaphram."

"Not a licenced mechanic but had this problem with a merc engine in the past..with David on this, it was my pump with a pinhole in the diaphram. I did replace the bulb first but it didn't help."
