"Allen,

There should be a Chrysler nameplate on the engine with numbers similar to what you see at this link.

The number on the block itself won't help much.

Can you find the nameplate?"

"The only tag I see is on the rear engine mount. What it says is, TYPE S M6, serial number 13912. I'll try to upload a picture. Thanks

That is the correct nameplate. That is a Chrysler M6 Ace:

 • Model: M6 Ace
 • 217.7 CID
 • 92HP @ 3200 RPM
 • Serial number range: M6-10001 to M6-18138
 • Production date range: 9/18/1940 to 4/6/1948
We sell an operators manual for that model at this link. There isn't a service manual for that model , but the service manual for the M26 would be very close. Same block, same displacement and horsepower."

"Thank you VERY much for the info!!! What would be the difference between the M6 and the M26? Also, what type of info is in the operating instructions manual? Thanks again!!!"

Allen,

The M6 was of course the earlier production (dates shown above). The M26 was in productions 5/12/1947 to 1/24/1950.

It appears there was different carburetion, manifolds, and cooling water piping. Not much else.

The small operators manuals covers the M6, M16, and M26, but doesn't list what the differences are.

Here is the M26:

"Thanks so much for you help. It's nice to know that there are people that have the knowledge and are willing to share it about these old boats. I've built numerous engines in my life time, but this is the first flathead I've ever owned. My great grandfather bought this garwood new in 1946, my wife found this forum and thought the boat was a '47. The restoration is complete, but I need to finish the engine wiring, so I want all the info I can get. Again, thank you very much for your help. As the other guy said, you are the man!!!"

"Allen,

Thanks for the feed

"Allen,

Thanks for the feedback. That's great that you have your great grandfathers garwood that he bought new!

I hope you will share some pictures with us here. You can post them yourself or you can email them to me and I will post them for you.

If you are interested in really old engines, I also run a site called OldMarineEngine.com that has a discussion board like this one, but it is devoted to "pre-1940 style inboard marine engines". Mainly the old one lungers, but there is some discussion about Chrysler, Gray Marine, etc.

Good luck with finishing your project, post some pics! Thanks."

Hello Andrew.

Here are a few shots of my boat. it's a 16' Ensign Utility. Shipped from Newport News, Virginia on October 25, 1946 to J.F Groover (dealer) in Lithia Springs, Ga.

The production number is 194 of 650. The boat has been researched and verified by the Garwood Society.

You can bet that I'll be asking you more questions as I finish her up. I hope thats OK.

Again, thanks for your help!<!-/quote-!>
