well let see it started with overheating after 2 hours in the water, replaced ruber seals for heat exchanger! then started over heating after 5 hours in the water at 3/4 power! when pulled out of the water noticed heat exchanger had no coolant in it, filled back with water. last time i took it out started over heating again when brought up to 1/2 power, when i increased RPM the boat would not speed up, when flushing at the house noticed that my outlet hose coming out of the water pump busted?

i believe my thermostat is bad, will be replacing next week, furthermore im going to be taking my risers off and cleanig them because i sucked some sand last time i had it out.

any one have any ideas of what could be wrong?

any help or tips would be great. this is my first volvo penta and my second I/O dont know much abou them. i know more about outboards than I/O.

You mentioned sand. I have seen the manifolds fill with sand and create all sorts of heating problems. Pull them off and flush really well and while you're at it you might knock the casting "freeze plugs" out and flush the block also. Check your impeller and pump housing for wear also.

...... and do not add plain water to your Heat Exchanger.
This is to be Ethylene Glycol and distilled h20, to keep the PH balance correct.

You made no mention of having replaced the sea water pump impeller!
And I would strongly suggest that you replace the "water neck" fitting and special beaded gasket.

I Strongly Suggest that you get these completely out of the equation as for being suspect items!

I see I'm a few days late weighing in on this, so hopefully you'll check back. There is a possiblity your heat exchanger may have a hole in it allowing your coolant to leak out. I had it happen to mine a few years back. If you fill it up with coolant again and it dissappears on you it's a pretty safe bet that that's a part of the the problem.
