Need help with 1965 Johnson 35hp

I recently bought a boat with a 1965 Johnson 35 hp and when I hooked a new battery up the starter would not get power. But when I hooked up jumper cables to the starter it worked fine. Anyone have any ideas on what the issue may be?
 
No 35 HP in 1965.----Is it a 33 HP model.----Throttle is advanced too far , or safety switch needs cleaning.---Or defective solenoid.
 
Find the switch.----Has one white wire going to it.---And only 1 wire !----under the flywheel.----Starboard side of motor.
