Need help troubleshooting 2005 90HP CDM Mercury

Trying to get a 90HP CDM motor to run right. I did a link and sync on the motor, got it running at about 900 rpm and the motor did a lite backfire and the motor started running backward... went back and checked all the timing setting everything was set right, tried it again same thing running fine then lite pop and the motor is running backward. Did this all afternoon, said he** with it and went out and got 3 new cdm 's and a new timer. Removed and replaced everything and the same thing.... running ,pop, backward. I bought the motor from a guy who could not fix it, I need your help to not let this motor win. Thanks
 
Yes, the flywheel key is good, removed the flywheel and it's good. it's not really a backfire or a carb spitting, just a little kick noise then backwards and it always makes a grinding noise as it starts the cycle.
