" I have purchased a 1984 16 ft Bass tracker aluminum boat with a what semms to be a very good working 40 hp mercury outboard motor I have taken it out twice now and it really runs great. What I am interested in knowing is what year it is and if I am starting it right.
I found a little round plate, that looks like a freeze plug and the numbers are 6141011.
It also has Thunderbolt ignition marked on it.
I have had small outboards in the past but this is myfirst over 20 hp motor and I want to keep it in good running cond.
When I bought it the seller told me that when he had started it he pushed the choke button in and pushed the throttle all the way forward, but when i did this, it started but i revved really loud, I immed pulled the throttle back to Idle
and the second time I just pushed the choke in and pushed the throttle in a little so it wouldn't scream at start.
Again this thing works really great and I was just wondering how dependable this type of motor is and if this type of motor or year has any flaws.
oh also on the front of the motor by the timing
and gap info it sez M-40 timing.
