"Merc's serial numbers are really just a production number. In and of themself they give no usable information.

You compare the number to a production list to determine what year that number was assigned.

It doesn't, however, give any other info - so no listing as to the horsepower, model etc.

What makes identifying your model year even more difficult is the fact that your serial is from Mercury in Austrailia. Records for their production, at least in North America, are next to non-existant.

I can tell you that it was produced sometime between 1980 and 1985, but nothing more based on the number alone. In some cases the horsepower can help narrow that down.

Do you know the horsepower? or are you trying to determine that as well? There are a few ways to narrow it down if you need that also...."

The carb casting would be something starting with a WM or WC followed by a couple numbers.

An inline 6 could make it anything from a 90 horse up, a V-6 would mean it's most probably either a 135 or 150 horse..."
