Need help to chose the ideal engine

Hi!
I'm French so excuse my English, I live in New Caledonia, a little Island nearAustralia and New Zealand.

I have a hull, it's Riva Junior, all wood, 5.5m long, I don' have any engine.

Stock is a V8 Chris craft of 190HP, I want a V8 too but with little morehorsepower

I see a Mercruiser dealer for the all new 6.2 engine, but little bit expensive(25000, I don't want to put a reman engine, I find this one https://www.tristarengines.com/marin...e-crate-engine
The price is ok, aluminum head sound to be great for the weight but 450 HP is toomuch

Maybe you can tell me an engine as good as the tristar with 250-300 HP forless$$?

I want to run freshwater, so with a less expensive engine.



Did you think a new marine 5.7 long blockwas stronger than this Dart block and heads?

My hull is a luxury classic boat, I wouldlike to run with an awesome engine too, I want to put stainless headers on it,and find a stainless cooling system with pulley and brackets.like this one http://www.hardin-marine.com/p-74084-billet-trac-ls1-ls2-ls3-and-ls6-serpentine-pulley-accessory-drive-kit.aspxbut they said it’s for LS engine, does it fit the tristar or marine 5.7??

I faced a similar re engine decision some years ago. My 1969 Chris Craft Lancer is 23 ft long and has a 22 degree deadrise hull. It is all fiberglass and it's dry weight is about 4000#. It's original engine was a Chriscraft 185 HP 283 CID engine ( 283FLV). After much thought and discussion, I chose a factory new Mercruiser 5.7L MIE with an aftermarket "fresh water" cooling system. This engine is rated at 260HP. It has a 2 bbl TKS (turn key start... a bit of hyperbole !) carburetor. If we did not have mandatory 10% ethanol, the carb would have been 100% trouble free (11 seasons 6 months long, on the Jersey Shore). The mechanic who did the swap tried to sell me on a fuel injected engine, but I wanted a carbed engine... My rationale? in over 50 years of boating, I've never been unable to get home with a carbed engine, even though I have had the occasional carb related issue, and I did not want to go from 185 HP to 300+. Going from the original CC engine to the new MERC resulted in significantly better fuel economy ( 7 gph vs 10 at cruise) and an increased cruise and top speed ( both up about 10 mph). In considering a carbed vs FI engine, in your situation I'd look at the maintenance costs, i.e., carb rebuild kit vs injector rebuilds and replacement engine control computers.

RE: Stainless add ons... personally not a fan of dressing up engines, but it's your money!
 
mmmm.... a glitch in this system thinks that the following edit of mine is less than 5 characters...

RE: Stainless Headers.... Unless you remove your engine hatch and have the engine exposed at all times while running, SS headers would be a major fire and safety hazard. "
