"I purchased a replacement on

"I purchased a replacement on ebay as mine has several broken parts. How much of the sterndrive would I have to remove to replace this piece? I am leaning towards letting a pro do it but if its not too hard...
I am moderately mechanically inclined, I recently replaced the carb, fuel pump and manifolds but this sterndrive area makes me cringe"

"Kent, get a copy of the Seloc

"Kent, get a copy of the Seloc repair manual. It will be cheaper that letting a pro do it."

"The thing should be removable

"The thing should be removable without pulling the drive. Use pliers to remove the latch spring which is located in the center of the pawl. Using a wrench, back out the two retaining pins which are screwed into the bearing housing. There are holes in the yoke to allow the pins to move back. IMO"

There is another manual which

There is another manual which provides much better description and drawings of the pawl. I believe it is called "Clymer" (?).

"The sleeve to which the shaft

"The sleeve to which the shafts attachs is damaged and needs to be replaced as well. This is the steering sleeve I belive
I have the clymer, and now the online seloc version.
Still a bit unclear as to how much of the drive I actually need to dismantal.
This is part of the intermediate section, I need to remove the lower half to remove this also?"

"To remove part 44 you need to

"To remove part 44 you need to remove the outdrive from the boat, then pull both the upper and lower gear assemblies, then remove the water tube.

Sorry, but you are in for a big job. Not difficult, but long and a bit tedious."

"You are welcome. And again, b

"You are welcome. And again, before you send your outdrive to a shop, I suggest that you read a repair manual (either Seloc, Clymer, OEM or the one I gave you a link to) and see if you feel capable of doing the job by yourself. If you do, it would be a good learning experience."

"Just wondering, I took a copy

"Just wondering, I took a copy of that parts diagram along with the complete part I need installed into the local penta repair shop. The service guy told me that it would be about 2 hours labour to do what I want. Is that about right? I am not sure if he realizes that the outdrive needs to be removed to replace that #44"
