Need help removing lower unit

I have a 1997 Evinrude OceanPr

I have a 1997 Evinrude OceanPro 225 and I need some help removing the lower unit. I'm having trouble locating the bolt or pin for the shift rod linkage that the manual says to remove. The pictures aren't that helpful or the directions. Can someone provide some more insight as to what I'm looking for? I just can't for the life of me see it...

there is a 'hairpin'..on starboard side of shifting mechanism,..pull it out,...push,assembly,to port side about 1/2 inch or so,...u may need to mess around w/it,but ,thats it."
 
thanks! actually I ended up re

thanks! actually I ended up removing the silencer and was able to (barely) access the bolt connecting the shift rod to the linkage. this did the trick. the seloc manual wasn't very clear on this at all....
