"Help, I hit a big rock recen

"Help, I hit a big rock recently and snapped the skeg off the bottom of my motor. (92 70HP, 70TLEND) My propeller guy fixed the skeg and propeller but showed me the shaft 40 mils out of round. Suggested I pull it and have it straightened. Being pretty mechanically inclined, I pulled the bearing housing, the snap rings and reverse gear. (Easy as pie) however, I can't get the propeller shaft out past forward gear. I didn't want to pull the main drive shaft and was wondering if there is any "tricks" to get this shaft out. THANKS in Advance."

"Only way is to pull the drive

"Only way is to pull the driveshaft, take out the shift rod.
The shaft will come out as an assy with forward gear and shift housing."

"Thanks a million, I assume t

"Thanks a million, I assume the pinion to drive-shaft nut must be removed from inside the gearhousing to pull the drive shaft out?? Is that nut Lock-tighted in after re-torque??"

are you 2 talking about removi

are you 2 talking about removing the prop shaft or the drive shaft?.......im confused!

"I have to remove the propelle

"I have to remove the propeller shaft. In order to remove that shaft, the pinion gear on the bottom of the drive shaft has to "get out of the way". This gear being in-place keeps the forward gear and the shift assembly (all attached to the prop shaft) from sliding out the back end of the gear housing. I thought there might be a "trick" to dis-engage the shift assembly from the back of the shaft. When i get the prop shaft and shift assembly out, i believe theres a pin running through the prop shaft and pinion dog that will have to be pressed out."

"To remove prop shaft:
Out wi

"To remove prop shaft:
Out with bearing-housing and lock rings.
Remove reverse gear.
Unscrew pinion nut, but leave it on about one thread on the shaft.
Unscrew upper bearing housing on driveshaft.
Shift into neutral, and put a 'spacer' between clutch dog and pinion nut. Give the prop-shaft a short 'knock' up-wards, and the pinion will come loose.
Take off pinion nut, off pinion and lift up drive shaft. ( Note loose rollers that might fall out from pinion bearing).
Measure Your shift rod height when in neutral!!!!!
Push down shift rod all the way and un-screw it.
Pull out the prop shaft assy with forward gear and shift housing."

"thanks again for your help!!

"thanks again for your help!! I have finally got it out!!!! Just like you said!!!

"Glad to be of assistance. Hop

"Glad to be of assistance. Hope You did not forget to note the shift rod height, that one is crucial at assembly!"

I measured the height in forwa

I measured the height in forward and reverse when I pulled the lower unit. I noticed you called this out a couple times in your reply!! Why so important? cant it be adjusted after you bolt up the lower unit to the exhaust piece?? or can't this be adjusted through the shifter assembly?? One last question. Do you lock-tight the pinion nut to the drive shaft??

"The adjustment is made in NEU

"The adjustment is made in NEUTRAL, not forward or reverse. The rod may not easily be adjusted when bolted up. Better get it right before putting the lower unit back on the leg.
No lock-Tite on nut, use a new one."
