Need help pulling lower unit 40hp evinrude vro.

Ok guys I am frustrated. I am trying to find or get to the shifting rod. From what I can see the bolt looks to be just below the bottom carb. If this is it how do I get to it short of pulling the carb off? I have 2 different books telling me 2 different things. I have searched youtube, for a step by step. with no luck. Can someone please help me? Or where can I find the answer in the archives??
 
I got it. I had to take the sides off to get it. It is a 91 E40ELI. I believe. I will be on here a lot from the looks of it. After I get the water pump installed It will be tune up time!!
 
I use a long 1/4" drive extension with a universal swivel socket to loosen or tighten that bolt, and a flexible mechanics finger grabbing tool to pull it out of there or to slide it back into place.

The Evinrude/Johnson code is the word INTRODUCES whereas each letter stands for a number, therefore the "EL" you mention in the model number would actually be a "EI" which stands for 91 (1991).
