"Sounds like someone has already been doing some rewiring to yours. The coil should have 2 gray and 1 black on the neg post. One gray to ESA, one to the tach and black coming from the points. The pos post should have a pur/bl coming from the starter solenoid and a pur/r coming from the alternator which is your resistor wire. Not sure why you need a ballast unless you are supposed to bypass the resistor wire?"

"the mallory elec, ign, kit say to use a ballist resistor on the switch wire that hook to the + side of the coil and it say to use a coil that is compatable with the ballist resistor. i know very little about boats and i can't find no one around here that wokk work on these boat thank for the help"

"If the engine has original wiring harness, the resistor is 'built into' the + wire going to coil already. Use a volt meter to check."
