"Orley,
What year is this engine? What is the model number?

The float adjustment is not really critical. I adjust all floats the same way. I hold the carb body upside down and adjust the float so that the edge nearest the body is parallel to the body.

This is a 1985 model.It is a XR-2 BlackMax 150
ser # OB175839. I took it uot and checked it further today. It will sound good up to 2100 RPM.
Then it goes bad the best I can tell I have 3 cylinders dropping in and out. The compression on this thing is running about 120psi in all cylinders.

"Orley,

It sounds like the stator is bad. The stator has two windings. One is for cranking and low rpms, the other is for high rpms. The only test you can do with an ordinary multimeter is the resistance check.

You have to disconnect the stator leads to both switchboxes. Touch the red lead to the blue (or blue-white) wire and the black lead to ground. Next touch the red lead to the red (or red-white) wire and the black lead to ground. Test the resistance across the red and blue wires (or red-white and blue-white).

Do this for both sets of stator leads, and let me know what readings you get.

Before you start this, test for spark if you have not already done that. Spark should jump a gap of 7/16 inch or so.
