Hello all. I'm new here so please bare with me. 1st off, I tried looking for the proper sub forum area to post this but wasn't sure where was the best place. So please forgive me and feel free to direct me to where the proper place would be.

Ok...I have a 1996 Mercury 8hp 2 stroke outboard. The problem I am having is starting and keeping it running. Before I decided to tear into it the motor ran fine, but...it got to a point where the only way to I could get it started was to shoot some starter fluid into the carb. Once it fired up and ran for 20-30 seconds I could go to the lake like an hour later and it would start on one pull. Sooo... I decided enough was enough and wanted to get to the bottom of the hard/no start situation. So I got a carb rebuild kit and pulled the carb and cleaned it thoroughly. I actually did this 3 different times just to make sure I didn't miss any holes, ports, etc. because it still wouldn't start without a shot of starter fluid 1st. Not only that but now it will only run for about 20 seconds ( no matter how much choke or throttle I give it ) and then dies. I have no way of knowing if it's flooding itself out or starving for gas. The other things I've done was to replace the fuel lines as well as shortened it from the tank to the motor and also got a new fuel filter even though the old one was spotless. Of course with the carb rebuild kit everything got fresh new gaskets. Still no joy. So, I'm looking for suggestions and also have a couple questions about a couple things that I (hopefully) have posted pics for. One is the armature thingy that is up by the Flywheel, and the other is the screw that sits on top of the fuel pump. The question about the armature is....what is it's function and should it be floppy loose and then what is the screw above the fuel pump do? It's just connected to the hard plastic center part of the fuel pump. How can it possibly adjust anything? Anyway...I apologize for the lengthy post, but any help would be GREATLY appreciated as the weather has finally cleared up and am trying to get her back on the water this weekend. Thanks very much for any help in advance,

The first thing to do is to get it running. Try spraying the carb with starting fluid when it is trying to die and see if it starts/keeps running, if it runs then try pumping the fuel bulb and see if that will keep it running. If it will run like that start looking for a fuel blockage in the hose, fuel pump not doing it's job, large vacuum leak and so forth that would prevent the carb from getting fuel. I don't know your engine but that top linkage looks a lot like timing advance and if you look at the bottom of the drawn in arrow in your second picture you will see a cam that serves as idle stop and the adjustable screw should touch it at full throttle as a wot speed adjustment.

Thank you so much for your reply. As far as a fuel line blockage there should be none. I have replaced all fuel lines. I am going to pull the car back off for the third time and triple check that none of the ports or holes are blocked. Also on the priming issue I have manually pulled on the throttle
cable to try to keep it going and that only works for a second or two. Same goes for squeezing the primer ball when it starts to die. Runs for an extra second or two and then dies. The only thing I haven't really messed with is is adjusting the air mixture screw. Meaning, I can't keep it running long enough to make any adjustments. At this point I have it at factory starting setting point which is fully seated and then backed off one and a half turns. Also, I understand the idle adjustment screw that you speak of and have it hopefully set correctly. I was actually asking about the screw that is mounted on top of the fuel pump itself. Just wondering what that does. It's connected to the middle solid part of the fuel pump and I don't see how that could adjust anything. But... What do I know? LOL Thanks again.

Like swag said.. as it dies, spray gas or Eather in and see if it stays running. If it stays running, you are running out of fuel somehow. That screw is for wide open throttle/ engine timing.

Ok, thanks guys. I'll check all that out. Thanks
verry much for the advice. I'll check back if and when I find the problem. Not only for your curiosity but perhaps it may help someone else with the same problem. I'll be back!
