Hi thanks for letting me join, i am new to boating and am looking for a little help identifying an outboard i just bought.
All i know about it is what i can see and what the cover says on it.

So the cover says mariner 40 and it has power t&t, electric start, oil injection, 4 cylinders and going on the size its a long shaft (i think) i cant find a serial number but it was getting dark last night when i looked.

Thanks in advance

After doing some internet searching the cover seems to look very similar to the 1997 example on the mariner identification page.

Does anyone have any experience with these 4 cylinder 2 stroke mariners ? I have seen some reviews which say they are great and bullet proof etc and also some which were less positive.

Thanks

I don't recognize the decals right off (they changed the style over the years).

It IS an Mercury Mariner (not the Yamaha version) and it's certainly no older than the very late 1980's (has the newer style top cowl).

In (about) 1997 Merc started using a 3 cylinder powerhead for the 2 stroke 40 but didn't start building the 4 cylinder model until mid 1990 (at least the run this one belongs to).

So best guess is somewhere between 1990 and 1997 - mechanically identical regardless of which year it actually came off the production line.

There should be a serial number on a rectangular sticker on the leg, near the transom bracket (right hand side from the perspective of looking at the prop end). There may also be a serial number on a welsh plug (silver disk the size of a quarter) "somewhere" on the powerhead itself (don't know off hand where it was on the 4 cylinder models).

Your serial should start as 0Cxxxxx through 0Gxxxxx for this particular model.
