Need help finding serial # on engine block

I need some info on how to fin

I need some info on how to find what my engine block is. when i bought the boat the owner told me the engine is a 200 hp. the outside of the engine shows it is a mercury 150 xr4. The serial # on transom says A960550. I think it is a 1992 model but not sure. I blew a head gasket and burned a hole in the #2 cyl. and need to order parts and repair manual. Using the serial number provided above to look up parts it is showing the cyl. bore at 3.125 and i measured the cyl bore at 3.375. any info would be greatly appreciated.

"Adam, unfortunately a Merc serial gives you little information other than the year (maybe). Your particular serial could be from anything ranging from a 6 horse all the way up to 175.

I can tell you one thing though, it's most likely not a 1992 model, that serial range was somewhere in the 1985/86 time frame, and by 1992 the XR4 models were long gone in favour of the XR6's (which were just finishing up). In fact your serial even predates the XR4 models (and all the 200 horse versions which started with 0Bxxxxx serials).

If you can find numbers on the carbs that may help - look for a "WH" followed by a couple of digits (ie WH 40 etc).

I suspect that you have a 1986, 150 there with the 2.4 litre block which predated the XR series by a year or two or the 2 litre XR2 version - maybe someone swapped the hood along the way. If so, it is actually a better motor than the XR series which had numerous issues...."

"Well that helped - the WH-39's were on 1985 200 horse models. So either someone replaced the "hood" somewhere along the line, or they hopped up the motor through a carb change."

"I have seen some ring sets for 150Hp. 2.4L xr4 and another part # listing for 175Hp. 2.4L that both have a bore of 3.375. should I just order the piston and rings by bore size or should I find out exactly what engine I do have? thanks in advance for the input. I have messed with many engines in my lifetime but this is the first outboard, so if I can figure out what parts I need the rest should be somewhat self explanatory. Your input has been really helpfull..."

"Adam, if you are going to tear it down to replace the rings (and take a look at the rest for wear/tear) why not just take the block into a local engine shop. I'm sure for a few bucks they will put the mircometer to it and give you some exact dimensions - could save you playing around with the "wrong parts"."
