"Hello,

I have a 1973 Evinrude Fastwin 20hp (European equivalent of the U.S 18hp) and I'm trying to find a part number for the 5 screws/bolts that go through the underside of the lower motor cover and into the engine block, thus holding the block down. They have a 5/16 head if remember correctly but not sure waht the thread is, just to clarify, I'm looking for the 5 smaller bolts of the 7 that hold the block down and I've checked the schematic.

Cheers"

"I dont know if this table of spanner jaw sizes (IE head dimensions) will help but 5/16" AF appears to tally with a no.10 UNC bolt (or a no. 6 UNC nut)http://www.sat.dundee.ac.uk/~psc/spanner_jaw.html#Jaw_Size_Table

You ought be able to find the part number if you want to go down that route on the parts diagram at http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=fe734c8d0d019e57d43e69c77c477f81

(Sorry same site as already posted)

But I cannot relate what you are asking for to the parts diagrams of an 18hp! The lower cover does not appear to be directly bolted to the cylinder block!

I dont know where you'll buy American thread bolts and screws in the UK. If I have identified the thread size correctly then 3/16" Whitworth will fit but be a bit sloppy ( both are 24 TPI but the Whitworth is very slightly smaller in diameter. Not even easy to find Whitworth bolts now!"

"Hello Chaps,

Cheers for the replies, I have a feeling that the bolts I am looking for are on the schematic of the exhaust housing, not the lower cover, part no 118, I'm basing this on the fact that it says qty 5 next to the description and part number, which is the amount I'm looking for. Does anyone have any opinions on that? If I'm wrong and you know that part number 118 has nothing to do with the block then please speak up.

Cheers"

If they are in fact 1/4" 2

If they are in fact 1/4" 20 tpi as suggested else where then you may get away with 1/4 Whitworth as that is also 20tpi provided there is no problem with the size of the heads.
