"I just bought this boat which has been sitting 5 years. So I decided to do some maintenance before attempting to run it. I bought a manual (not very good) and removed the lower unit to rebuild the water pump. The manual said to notwhere the coupler was , so i did, 6 threads showing. I took it apart, and rebuilt the pump. Before putting it back together, I decided to clean up the coupler and lube it with anti seize. I put it back together, but now I seem to have a problem. When i adjust it to get neutral, when I put it into either forward or reverse, it seems to bind, almost like it's going to far. This is only with the engine off and turning the prop by habd.

My crappy manual has no adjustment procedure in it, can someone help me and detail how to adjust the coupler and shifting ??? Thanks."

"I recently bought a boat with a chrysler motor as well...so I'm not an expert either. My problem is I only have either forward or reverse and no matter what I do to the linkage, I can't have both....so I've been researching the topic. I found on another forum that when the lower unit is dropped the shift rod must also be in the same position when reinstalled. Did it get pushed down when you put the lower unit back on? You may want to drop it and reinstall it to see if that helps....like I said, not an expert at all, just passing on researched info and hope it helps"

"It's not a shift cable is

"It's not a shift cable issue. It seems to be the coupling rod adjustment. I either go too far one way or the other when trying to adjust for the gears, almost like the shift rod/coupler is adjusted too long and pushing it beyond where it wants to be. In neutral, the prop turns freely. When I put it into reverse, the prop seems to bind going in before it locks up. Seems like it is pushing it too far when going into gear. I was looking for the proper adjustment procedure for the shift rod after servicing the water pump."
