"I have a 25 h.p. Mercury outboard that I bought new in 2005 and I have been maintaining it as per the manual. Recently the motor wouldn’t lift up when I put it in forward. I took it to the dealership and they said the rod was slightly bent and they fixed it for free. NOW, my son and I were out fishing and he noticed water was coming out around the bottom of the cover. We removed the cover and there is water coming out from below the bottom cylinder. There is water coming out of the rubber hose also so it’s not clogged. The water is not shooting out just bubbling out below the bottom of the engine. I’M JUST SICK! Prime Time Bluegills too. I hope it’s not a cracked cylinder. The engine runs fine. THANKS for any help!"

Relax! It's probably just a blown base gasket. Nothing to worry about. Go fishing now and have it fixed later.

"Not hard to fix, but you need to pay special atention to the shift mechanism. The rod pulls up to shift and has to be disconnnected before the powerhead comes off.

"Question? Could it be that the bolts are loose?
If so, which ones do I tighten? TIA"

"Yes, #3 is the base gasket.

"Yes, #3 is the base gasket.

Tighten the powerhead down to 10 foot pounds with a torque wrench.

The bolts come up from underneath the base, 3 on each side.

They could be the issue, however, most times if it's loose bolts you will get a backfire that may seem to come from (under) the carb. But certainly give it a try."
