Need help 1995 evinrude 48

I left my manual at home but need some info asap. I'm getting ready to install my lower unit (gearcase). What is the measurement of the height of the hole in the shift rod above the top of the gearcase? I think it is 22" but for some reason 22 1/4" is also in my head. Thanks
 
I did around 22"..... I got home and looked at my manual and it says long shaft height should be 20-29/32". I had a call out to the mechanic that repaired the lower unit and he said 21 15/16! I must have looked at the tape measure wrong thinking 21" was 22". Well, I thought I did 22" and everything seems to be working/shifting fine.
