"Hello All,
Please help me with guidance and advice for buying or repairing my boat's control box. My first day out in Bay Point, my control was jammed. I couldn't place it in Neutral or Reverse. I opened the box and found out that the left side blade which has a gap for the knot on the middle round blade that's connected to the lever has been worn off. Luckily, I got the motor start. As soon as the motor fired, my boat went straight into the shrub and shore. I had to shut it down and have my friend towed my boat to the open. Can ya'll help me with advice as whether I can buy this saying blade anywhere to replace it or can I buy a used control for cheap and replace my whole set of gear and gas control. What type of Mercury control is compatible for my long shaft 80hp 1972-1978 mercury outboard motor on a 16-17' 1972 tri-hull boat???

Last night I picked up a newer model control from a local shop. I moved my gas and gear cables over. They fitted alright. However, It's still really hard to move the control. I think that the transmission got jammed up somewhere. My cables look fine. Another problem occured: Since the new control box doesn't have any cable or cord. I intented to move my key switch and the whole ignition set over. The wires are too old and all the outer layer shed off. My key switch is now no longer turning. I now have nothing left but 2 cables attached to the engine...I am intending to find a compatible control box with full set of cables and cord. I then will try to change the whole set. I have to change the whole set...Or is there an alternative? Please let me know if I can do this by myself?
