There is no 6J-71G listed in the OMC guide book. However, a 6R71 is a 1971 6hp Johnson.

Clean points with either lacquer thinner or acetone. Have flywheel key aligned with fiber rubbing portion of points, then set so that a .020 goes thru but a .022 will not.

i had blue spark on both plugs, but i will pull the mag anyway.got the mag off, put cyl #1 at TDC using a dial indicator threaded into the spark plug hole. the twist throttle is in the start possion, the points have been swiped with 200 grit paper sprayed off with contact cleaner, there is a collar on the crank end that the points arm rides on, its marked TOP. the points arm is in the section marked TOP . i re gapped it to .020 with a good set of feeler gauges. then rotated the #2 cyl. to TDC and repeated the above. the points arm for #2 cyl. is in the section marked TOP, i made sure the points set screws are both tight, i wish this sight would let me put pix in the post. then i put the mag back on, and yes i made sure the key was linged up and also made sure the key was in good condition. the magnet surface's in the mag are Very clean i put the (Air Gap Spark tester) at 1/4" and Bright Fat Blue spark jumped the gap on Both. dribbled in gas and ity went pop-pop-pop. then couldnot get it to pop again. so not trustinh the idiot that said he knew how to work on them, i got out my tester and #1 cyl. only has 54 # compression, cyl #2 only has 52 # . Game over, i should have stuck to the ( golden rule B A S I C S ) and did it my self, #1 spark, #2 compression, #3 fuel.
