This is on a 1972 85hp Johnson. My tach must have shorted out the face plate smoked up and it quit. Can I pick up a two wire tach at a auto parts store? Thanks for any feed back

"Bill... That engine is design

"Bill... That engine is designed to operate with a tachometer that uses a pulse from the charging system. A two wire tach (to my knowledge) doesn't do that. The marine tachometers usually have four wires... purple(12v +), tan(pulse), red(light), black(ground). And usually a dial on the back where one can pick the pulse setting, it gets set to six (6) on yours.

Joe thanks for the input the tach that is in my boat has two wires. I don't know if was the right one. The first time I tried the boat prior to buying it done a melt down. It was wired into the control box and done very poor. It did not look at all like a factory install. If I bought one from a boat shop would it have instructions to install?

"Bill.... Yes, a new one purch

"Bill.... Yes, a new one purchased from a marine dealership would have (should have) complete instructions included with it. Just be sure that the dealership is fully aware of the engine make, year and horsepower that you intend to use the tach with, so as to avoid a lack of communication.
