"I have a 2001 stingray with a 5.0L mercrusier. my brother has decied to run the boat and not drain the water out of the motor and it froze over this winter pushing the freeze plugs out on both sides, cracking the block.

we fixed the block with lock and stich and we now have water in the oil. the motor only has 20 hours on it, so i know the parts are good. is there any way to short block it or fix it another way. thanks for the help Trey"

"with a V8 I've seen the inside of the blocks crack underneath the intake manifold. Cracks here can be difficult to patch/weld and will affect the flatness of the tops of the cylinder bores affecting the heads ability to seal. Cylinder Shape can aslo be affected causing other issues. You can also get cracks in the cylinders themselves and in the heads. Pull the heads and see if they are cracked but be warned you only have a 50% chance at that, the best way is to have the heads MAGFLUXED where magnetism is used to detect cracks. Long Block is usually the quickest way to get back going, as you dont have to assemble the heads onto the block.

Oh, and how's the exhaust manifolds ? if they had water in them, there' cracked to."

"thanks brian for the reply bu

"thanks brian for the reply but the manifolds are fine we checked them too. what do you think about short blocking the motor since its only got 20 hours on it. i understand that marine motors are more heavy duty than car motors. iam wondering how hard it would be to find one, either used or new. thanks Trey"

You can get a short b

Trey:

You can get a short block for it. You should be concerned about cracks in the internal water passages of the heads.

"the marine V8 blocks aren&#39

"the marine V8 blocks aren't much different, High Performance or Heavy Duty use you want a 4 Bolt main and forged pistons or better, if you are going to use your oil pan you need to note the dipstick location and if you have a mechanical fuel pump or not, you need to make sure the replacement block will also have the ability for the same. Then there is other differences like one-peice rear main seal and roller cam shaft depending on year. Long Block is then vortec heads and intake or not. Lastly is the camshaft and brass freeze plugs for the water jackets."
