Ratcheting sound coming from the gear housing/shaft area. Was cruising along in 18' searay with my 20 year old Mercury 115HP 4 cyl 2 stroke, when suddenly this noisy ratcheting sound. Shut it down within seconds, now it's back on the trailer. When I turn prop clockwise in forward -the ratcheting sound is there. Sounds like it's coming form the lower gear housing, or partway up the prop shaft. In reverse gear - resistance, no ratcheting? Any ideas much appreciated.

The ratcheting in forward in the clockwise direction is very normal ( locks going counterclockwise )----------When you drain the oil what do you see , any metal chunks on a magnet ???

Maybe remove the lower unit and start the motor momentarily to see if the " sound " is in the engine or lower unit .----------A screwdriver or broom handle on the block and held to your hear is a " poorman's scope " and will amplify engine " bad noises "

Yes, definately check the gear oil for metal, but your problem may be a little less synister :)

You may have stretched your shift cable (due to age, seizing etc).

You can remove your (hood) and observe how far the linkage travels (with the motor off) when you put it in forward gear.

Then, unhook the control cable and see if you can move the control arm further (it should kinda "click" when it gets where it wants to be) - if you can, the cable is probably streached a little too long.

If the shiftshaft is not causing the forward gear to fully engage the pinion gear, you will get quite the grinding sound.

Forward gear is always engaged with the pinion------------It is the clutch dog that may not be properly engaged with forward gear.

Not good. Number 1 piston is shot. Without pulling it right down, they assumed probably a failed oil injector - supposedly the most common cause in this model.
Not a lot of places here in Canada that do rebuilds, but see a lot of options in the states, where I can get a rebuilt powerhead for just over $2K. Thing is I have no idea of quality of workmanship?
Any recommendations guys?
