Boating newbie here. I have an older astroglass boat that my father in law gave me a couple of years ago. It has a mid 80's Merc 115 on it. I finally have the money (I hope) to get it running. Anyway, today I took the cover off the engine to pull a spark plug and I noticed black, gooey stuff on the inside of the cover. It was coming from something that looks a lot like an ignition module from an older vehicle, but I'm not sure that's what it is. I have a Clymer's shop manual, but I can't seem to find it in the manual. It's a small black plastic box that is screwed to the frame that runs vertically at the front of the engine. It is filled with some kind of black potting material and that's what is leaking out. When I removed it, it came apart and there's just a small circuit board inside with some wires running out.
There are no markings on it, unless they were on the gooey side, which is basically gone.
Does anybody know what this thing is called? I obviously need to replace it.
