"1976 Merc 200 (20 hp.) would die on me after planning off, then didn't like to restart. The bulb was always nice and hard, but the thing didn't want to start or run right.
Rebuilt carb and fuel pump (that "looked great"). No difference. After it died yet again (and it wasn't consistent: sometimes it ran okay for a while) I stumbled onto the reason: Bad fuel line bulb. The outlet check valve in the TEMPO bulb was locking up and closing off the line, killing the motor.
I stumbled onto this in a rage of frustration--who says getting pissed off doesn't help! Squeezing the hell out of the bulb, I felt it suddenly give way, as if a line had popped off somewhere. After determining that had NOT happened, I was able to fire the motor up with a bit of choke.
A new fuel line and all is well.
