Hi folks,
My obession,as it's been called here,:D my beautiful merc800,1969 vintage is putting out 17+ volts by my fishfinder and voltmeter even with a fully charged battery and replaced rectifier. Would I be right in thinking that my stator is about to go,if not already past it.
In the past I have had to renew the wires, soldered 1/4" from the windings and heat shrinked. At $250+ even my ever patient better half might lose the plot, considering I have spent more than the motor is worth:( But what the hell,it was worth it,and the looks of envy on the faces of those whose newer motors who are still at the slip when we're blowing out of there.:) I bet I'll be left at the slip for that.:D

Re: My obsession

High voltage on a non regulated system is usually caused by bad connections, bad cables, bad battery, or the wrong type battery being used.
I had a link to a rectifier/regulator that would work on your motor but can't find it right now.

Re: My obsession

:)Thanks ibnfshn,
Battery is a couple of years old now and supposed to be a marine,Halfords best, maybe I need a new internal harness,I have enough heat shrink on the wires to insulate a ship. I have a seloc and I find it good, looks like www,eastcoastmarineservices.com are going to get a bell, $80+ for that rectifier/regulator.And the $ up against the euro,ah well:). Thanks again, your help is always appreciated.

Re: My obsession

Does that thing have ballast resisitors if so change em. you can use chryco's from pep boys or the like as longs as they are 12v. ohm out the stator and if it is 0-10 ohms do not worry about it.

Re: My obsession

Hi JB,
This is Noel,I'm not totally up to speed on the new format yet:eek: but I'm working on it,and I have nearly as many lights as the Titanic:D.Ok I'm prone to exaggeration. But I'll switch a few on next time out.
Crankbearing,it's a beautiful 1969 merc800 4 cyl in need of some rewiring and to the best of my knowledge no resistors on her.Complete rebuild last year thanks to the help I got here and a Seloc, and a nice '84 Canadian 75HP lower unit on her and running sweet except I was a little worried about the 17+ v.
And welcome to the forum, you know your stuff.
Regards, Noel.
