I bought a used 1997 meruy 90 HP outboard. Are top cowling covers interchangable? Can a mercury cowling fit a force or marine motor making it looking like a mercury when it really isnt? I cant find any stickers or paper lables it identifying the mfg.
Thank you

Are cowlings interchangeable? - in some cases yes. A 90 Merc and 75 Merc from the same model run (as an example) will swap - so would a 6, 8, 9.9 etc.

Will a Force cowl swap with a Merc?

No, at least not without some other modifications. Force was given to Merc by it's parent (Brunswick) when they bought Bayliner (it was part of their US Marine division which had acquired it from the backrupt Chrysler outboard division). On some Force motors old/discontinued Merc parts were bolted on where they would fit, but make no mistake, a Force is not and never was a Merc.

If you think you got a 90 Force "disguised" as a Merc simply remove the cowl and have a look. If there is blue boxes (two of them) about the size of a cigarette pack with wires going to the sparkplugs, you have a Force.

Bryan, you may want to start a new thread with that question.
