My first volvo penta

"I am ashamed to ask this question, but all the other boats I have owned were mercruisers chevy motors . I always thought a volvo penta would be a volvo motor . didn't know it could be a volvo penta chevy or ford . whats the difference ? ( I'm not a Blonde ) but I'll never know till I ask ."

Pretty much all the engine Marinizers use Chevy base motors,...
Merc. dropped the Fords back in the 70s,...
Volvo dropped them in the early 90s...
OMC went belly up,.. Ford, Chevy, or otherwise...

Chevy Distributers are on the Aft end of the motor,...
Ford's are on the Front of the motor...."

"Leo, just to keep it confusing... some of us do have Volvo Pentas that actually have Volvo-made (as in really from Sweden) motors. These would be the AQ 100, 125, 130, 131, 145, 151, 170, (etc.? not sure I got 'em all here, but you get the idea) series of motors. These are basically Volvo car motors that the Volvo company marinized.

Good Luck keeping it all straight.

My 1972 vintage Volvo Penta 170 on a 270 outdrive has the brand name Chrysler (as in Dodge, Mopar, etc.) on some of the the outdrive trim. GO FIGURE?!

"Matt, not every maker installs their own engines in all packages. In the case of Volvo Penta, they found that unless they went to V6 or V8 engines, they could not compete with Mercruiser or OMC above 200 HP, so they installed Chevys and Fords rather than developing their own engines. Also, Mercruiser and OMC installed Fords and Chevys in applications over 200 HP.

It also happens in the automotive industry. Ford isntalls in their trucks International diesels, Dodge installs Cummins, and GM installs the Duramax, which is a joint venture with Isuzu. Chrysler/Dodge also installed Isuzus years ago."

I saw that Volvo just unveiled

I saw that Volvo just unveiled the Chevy 3.0 with fuel injection on it ...thought that was interesting 1950's designed pushrod 4 banger with EFI - supposedly rated 150HP so that's a nice boost above the 140HP plateau that engines been at for 40 years
