My boat is SLOW

Okay, so I have a 14 ft fiberglass boat with a Johnson 9.5 Hp outboard on it and with a relatively light load. (two people, 3 gallons of gas and only necessary equipment) I can only go 7 mph according to my gps.

I'm confused, I'm sure this combo should go a bit faster.

The prop is an 8.5 pitch.

Weight of passenger and driver???? Angle adjustment on transom??? Motor running on both cylinders??? Planing or plowing???

a 9.5 hp on a 14ft "fiberglass" boat is the wrong conbo

there is no way that the 9.5 hp will get the boat on plane to much weight for the engine!

When I run a 9.9 on my 14 foot aluminum (220 pound boat, 75 lb motor, 25 lbs of gas, maybe 20 pounds of junk/safety gear and 2 people - 300 lbs) so maybe 650'ish pounds I get maybe 15-16 mph.

What's the max horsepower rating for your boat (check the plate).

For a boat to perform "as designed" you need to run a motor that's at least 80% of the max rating.

So if your boat is rated for 30 horses you would have to run at least 25 (30 x .8 = 24 horses minimum)....

fiberglass is alot heavier then aluminum i have a 15ft fiberglass boat with a 40hp on it and i cant get her going about 25-30mph

a 9.9 on my boat would troll my boat wouldnt even come close to planning it

The motor angle is way too far out...drop it down several notches so it sits as close as possible to the transom...from that point raise it a notch at a time after testing it...that will give you the best angle to use.

If only I had the extra money to buy another engine. It is unfortunately not an option.

I will try bringing the motor in and see how it goes. I really don't need speed, but I would like 10 mph out of it.

ok so say around 700 pounds which is a far amount for a 9.5 especially if it doesnt plane alot of pressure fromt he water

It is a fair amount. It is raising the bow out of the water though. Probably because of how far out the outboard is.

I MAY be able to trade my 9.5 for a 35 hp. Guy has a boat too small for the outboard and I have an outboard too small for my boat.

I'm going to play with the trim before I do a trade though.

I know my outboard runs good.
