"model number is 55EL76E,not sure if the flywheel has been off but checked compression and there is 120 in each cylinder, motor is a 1976."

"1976 55hp Johnson. If it is actually backfiring (loudly) out the exhaust, most likely the flywheel key has sheared due to the flywheel nut not being properly torqued down (105 foot pounds). In which case, remove the flywheel, clean the flywheel and crankshaft tapers and install a new key.

If simply spitting and sputtering back at the carburetor area (not actually backfiring), that is usually due to fouled, clogged carburetors. In which case, remove, clean, and rebuild them."

"Hi,i was looking at the motor

"Hi,i was looking at the motor and checked the coils with a timing light number 1 is firing but the second one isn't....noticed a hairline crack, would this cause the problems i'm having?"

"that coil,should be replaced,

"that coil, should be replaced, but is not causing your backfiring.i would suspect, you need to pull the flywheel as joe says, and u prob need a pwr pack.but, ign sys should be ck'ed to verify."

"Hi again,we put a new coil on

"Hi again,we put a new coil on the motor,it started up and ran for about 15-20sec's and quit, tried again and acted like it wanted to start but it wouldn't.I pulled # 1 spark plug out,put piston at top dead center, the flywheel read tdc with the timing mark,i didn't pull the flywheel because everything looks good. It is still backfiring out the exhaust and won't start....now as you said, would this be the power pack or could this be something else?"

"the timing,is set at wide ope

"the timing,is set at wide open throttle,in gear w/load on eng...here is my thoughts on your backfiring...
1. sheared flywheel key
2.wires conn wrong to pack
3.wrong plug wires on wrong cyl
4.timer base,wires pinched etc
5.bad power pack(rarely causes backfire)"

"Hi...Thanks jwbmarine !...so

"Hi...Thanks jwbmarine !...so far this is what we came up with, put new coil on and both are firing, getting lots of fuel , #1 piston is at TDC and the timing mark is at TDC on flywheel, checked compression ...120 psi in each cylinder...we have spark, fuel and compression and all wires have been checked but when it's rolling over it's like there is no fire !!??"

"i would still ck the keyway i

"i would still ck the keyway in flywheel/crank...flywheel can rotate a lil,and still show a reasonable TDC.
I thought it was backfiring....u say now u hav no fire...u need to verify, that the keyway,is IN FACT in place, not sheared,so u can eliminate that poss..."

"checked the keyway in the cra

"checked the keyway in the crank, was all good.It was backfiring before we changed coil's but lost our spark....but we changed the power pack and is now running great. Thank you all for the info,it actually did help,we just opened(a month ago) a small business in small engine repair but this outboard motor stuff we are just learning.
Once again thank you and have a great day!!!!"

"glad u gotter going!....in 31

"glad u gotter going!....in 31 yrs,...i have never seen a bad pack,..cause a backfiring prob!..but,theoretically,possible....i would guess,.....that the 2 orange coil wires were crossed, and when new pack installed, they were corrected......
aint outboards fun!
..........oh,good luck,...w/your new shop...."
