Have a 89 Bayliner with a 305 5.0 in it. Have not had in the water yet But was wondering if anyone knows if anyone knows how many mpg's I can look to get, Has a 80 gallon tank. Thank You if any one can help me.

Don't know how you guys work out fuel consumption for boats in the US, but here in Austalia we work on litres per hour, or gallons per hour on imperial system. I had a 4.3l V6 that used around 30 litres / hour, and that was considered fairly economical. Petrol here is $1.60 litre at marina, thats $7.20 gallon!!!!! You guys have it good over there in terms of "gas" prices.

1 mpg to 5 mpg depending on how you operate it

best mileage is 800 to 1000 rpm in gear, not planing.... you may get 6 or 7 mpg puttering along like that

Not too sure on the 5.0. I have a 4.3L Vortex (like the other posters) and am getting about 1.5 mpg at 3600 RPM moving at approximatley 23 to 26 mph. putting at 800 to 1000 does increase the milage but Im not sure by how much. Yesterday, I put 70 miles on my 21' Bayliner (heavy loaded with 4 people and way to much camping equipment), I putted for two hours (about 7 miles) and was on step the rest of the time. Overall milage was 2.0 mpg. But, by running my Aux tank to empty (14 gallons) I managed 22.5 miles or about 1.6 mpg. I don't really understand the whole hours per gallon thing as you could be talking about a short distance putting or a far distance on step...makes no since...

Everything depends on how fast the tide is running.

The use of Engine Hours is for servicing intervals, as the distance travelled in a boat is hard to measure when used in water.

Most mariners rely on knowing the distance that their vessel can travel at certain engine Revolutions and in tidal conditions.

Bruce.

PS. Most Australians use their boats in rivers and out to sea and not lakes, so flow and tidal currents are considered every time.

It is the same price here on the water.
interesting to hear how that gap has closed when we have more oil than any other country.... does Australia have much oil?

G'day hystat,

Yes, we have a lot of oil, and could b e reasonably self-sufficient, but our government bean counters have decided that our oil should be on a parity with the dearest places in the world, apart from Europe, then they stick a huge tax on it as well.

I never buy from a Marina, just by local Service Station, seeing as the boat is on a trailer.

Bruce.
