Mouse nest in lower unit

The plastic pissing hose fitti

The plastic pissing hose fitting at the block on my 35 hp evinrude broke off and looks to be melted. I replaced it with brass and the exiting water seems to be the correct temperature. What worries me is the heavy exhaust from the two holes at the lower unit rear and little exhaust from the center of the prop. Could a mouse have built a nest in the lower unit? Can I fix it myself by removing the lower part of the lower unit? Any special instructions? Thanks Tom H.

"The small series of holes or

"The small series of holes or slots at the rear portion of the lower unit just above the cavitation plate is the water outlet for when the thermostat opens.

The holes/slots at the rear of the engine just below the hood pan is the exhaust relief area, designed to allow exhaust to escape when the engine is in the water. If these holes did not exist, in the water, the exhaust would back up, the engine couldn't breath, and the engine would die out.

Which area are you speaking of?

On a flushette, the major portion of the exhaust should exist the propeller regardless. When in doubt, drop the lower unit and inspect as needed.

"Where was the engine stored?

"Where was the engine stored? They are not that big of holes are they, for mice to get in there... It would be odd but has happend before.

I have seen a mice nest in the power head caseing but not in the lower unit."
