hi to all again . i have aquired a johnson 9hp with model no.9R71R can you tell me what year model it is please thanks

"In the case of the older Johnson's it's encoded right in the model number.

So for example in yours, 9R71R, the 9 signifies the horsepower model (9.5), one of the R's indicates "rope start" and believe the other is simply a production run letter with the 71 being the model year.

As another example 15E76 was a 1976, electric start, 15 horse. Sometimes their letter make total sense (R - rope start, E - electric start) other times they are further encoded as in 15BAL76 which was a 15 horse, (BA) Rope start with a lighting stator, L - long shaft, 15 horse - totally confused


Later on they went to more elaborate codes where the year (as 2 digits) was also "assigned" letters."
