motor wont turn over 1987 150 hp

i have my 1987 150 on a stand with only fuel hooked up. it turned over for a second then died. when i tried to start it again i got numerous backfires. how do i troubleshoot?

stuck carb float needle??? try to hit the float bowls with the plastic handle of a screwdriver CAREFULLY to de-stuck the needles... otherwise check for lack of fuel in the draining screws of the carbs... what things did you already checked??

i havent checked anything really. when i pump the bulb hard i get fuel from the carbs. i have spark not real confident on the timing and carb sync

in order to help you my friend, you need to check simple things first so we can help you the best we can, and remember, the carbs can be rebuilt but if the engine is not used frequently, the carbs can get clogged remember we are dealing with 2 cycle engines
