Motor won't stop.

I just finished overhauling an Evinrude 88 hp outboard, and I can not turn it off. I pulled the negative battery cable off the battery and it still won't stop running. I have to pull the fuel line and wait for it to run out of gas. Help.

More info please.

Is this a key-start? The engine is stopped by grounding the spark plug coil pack. Were you able to turn off the motor before? Is this a new problem?

It is NOT a good idea to disconnect the battery.----hopefully no damage was done.-----Now you know that this motor does NOT need the battery to run.

CMOS, it is a key switch. Looking at the book again trying to figure out problem. The switch appeared to be working, the one whole afternoon I had it out after I bought the boat, but it would usually stall. The stalling and rough to not running led me to do compression check which led to a complete overhaul. So if the way it is supposed to shut off, is by grounding the black/yellow wire to power pack, then that connection is not grounding when the switch is turned off. I think? The kill switch which is connected to the same post on ignition switch doesn't stop motor when activated either.

To Racerone, I hope I didn't hurt anything either.

Thank you both.

What is the model number of that 88hp engine?

The ignition is called a "Magneto Capacitance Discharge" system, meaning..... a fancy name for a magneto setup powering a solid state ignition system.

The kill circuit (stopping the engine) is completed by grounding out the Black/Yellow wire that leads from the powerpack to the ignition switch raised "M" terminal which is grounded "only" to the other "M" terminal that leads to ground when the key is in the OFF position.

With the engine running.... ground that Black/Yellow wire leading from the powerpack (At The Powerpack!).

If that stops the engine BUT does not stop when you simply turn the key to OFF... that indicate a faulty ignition switch.

If grounding the Black/Yellow wire at the powerpack "Does Not" stop the engine... that indicates a faulty powerpack.

I finally got smart and searched the forum for this issue, and joereeves you said the same thing to another poor soul having same problem as I. The first problem I had was the switch was sending 8. something volts to the power packs black/yellow wire. So I ordered a new switch, and I also just put a new power pack on it. My old power pack had nothing wrong with it, so I blew a hundred and ten bucks. But the switch was bad.

So other than the switch, I didn't have the pin connector connected properly. Stupid mistake on my part. I found it out checking the continuity between switch and power pack black/yellow wire.

I'll try it out on lake maybe Tuesday. Runs and shuts off great on muffs.
Thank you all on here for your help.

E88TSLEOC = 1995 88hp Evinrude

Yeah, those pins/sockets in those rubber connectors are pretty finicky... something to keep in mind.
