I have a 72 evinrude 50hp that I just tried to hook a tach up to but it did not work. Tach gets power but no signal. The grey signal wire does go all the way to the recifier. I tested battery while off and got 12.73v started motor and only got 12.62v. I then disconnected positive terminal figuring motor was not charging and would die but it did not. Only had battery cable off for 5-10 secs. But then when I tried to turn off with key switch and nothing happened. It shut off fine several times before I removed the battery cable.

I am assuming my tach is not working because of prior alternator problems but what could I have messed up by disconnecting the battery for such a short period? Thank you for any answers!

Big mistake! You will damage t

Big mistake! You will damage the rectifier by disconnecting the battery. Also that motor has an ignition system that is powered by the magneto and does not need the battery to run.The battery must be hooked up to prevent damage to the rectifier.Take an OHMS reading on the two yellow wires of the charging coil ( alternator )wire to wire and yellow to ground and report. You should install a new rectifier and they are not that expensive.

I get no reading from the 2 yellow wires coming out of the rectifier. Thanks for the quick reply.

No ---Take a reading on the tw

No ---Take a reading on the two wires going into the charge coil( under the flywheel ).---- yellow to yellow -----and yellow to ground.

OK the yellow coil wires read

OK the yellow coil wires read 1.8 at the 200 ohm setting and no reading on either yellow to ground.

You just need to get a new rec

You just need to get a new rectifier-------and never run the motor without a battery connected.Remove move the cover on the CD unit ( powerpack ) and touch a wire( insulated ) from the black / yellow to ground to see if it shuts off the ignition

Thanks for the info. I just go

Thanks for the info. I just got a new rectifier off Ebay for 25$ shipped. Do you think the rectifier was causing my tach to not work before I did it in for good or does my original problem lie elsewhere? Again thank you for all your help!
