Motor will not re-start

I am looking at a purchasing a boat that has a 1999 Merc 175 XR6 outboard. The owner says that the engine starts and runs good. When he stops and fishes, it will not restart. After it sits for a while.. an hour... maybe two, it will restart and he can run again. He said that it does not die when he is running down the lake, but it has died when he was idling around and it would not restart. It will spin-spin-spin, but it just will not start.

I have no idea what the problem is. It could be a fuel issue or its not getting a spark. I was hoping that this "might" be a common issue with these engines. Any idea on where to start looking for the culprit? I just don't know if this is a $20 problem or a $2000 problem.

Thanks.

Kirk, just posted about this issue. At first, I thought my motor was flooded because it did this and one day and went back and primed the bulb and it started right up. I have had this issue for about a year now and replaced the bulb and the fuel pump diaphram and did not solve the issue. Let me know if you have found out what the problem is.

Do you have the same engine (Merc XR6)? Right now, I do not own this boat. Possibly purchasing it. Right now if I bought it, it would just be a gamble. I know enough about engines (cars and boats) to get me in trouble. I could probably figure it out, just might take me a while. I talked to the current owner and he let one shop look at it, but they could not get it to repeat the issue.

I do not know what else he has tried to do to fix it... if anything.

Thanks
