Motor will not charge battery

I have a 1984 Johnson J10ELCRA 9.9hp Outboard that will not charge my battery, though it is set up to do so. I have replaced the rectifier. It is my understanding that I will have to remove the flywheel and replace the magneto. Is there any way to test the magneto before I spend the time and money, and is there anything else I should check. Thanks

My 1989? 9.9 has a fuse to HELP protect the charge system.

A common problem is there not being enough grease under the rectifer to carry heat away.
You also MUST have a wiring diagram with the color codes of the charging wires. My 9.9 & 30 hp have the same color coded wires. See if someone can post or E MAIL the color code.

Simple checks first. Lots of flywheels are ruined when they are hard to remove. Rarely do the coils die.

You MUST HAVE a voltage meter to find out if the magneto coils are putting out enough A C voltage at certain rpm speeds
