"On my 1985 25hp Merc, is there a lock/release lever (as on my 1964 6 hp Merc) so I can lock the engine in the vertical position (which it is now) and also release this lock so that if I hit an obstruction, such as a submerged stump/log, the motor will tilt up when the obstruction it hit. If it's there, I sure don't see it. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance...wjw"

"it should lock in reverse and neutral only, there is a cam in the lower unit that moves with the gear shift. You don't want it to lock in fwd unless you want to tear the lower off."

It must only move when the engine is running because it certainly does not move when the motor is not. Is this true? Thanks.....

Serial # for my 25hp 1985 Merc

Serial # for my 25hp 1985 Merc is...66226xx. My motor does NOT release the pin lock when shifted and not running.

"having trouble with your serial number, this must be Can. or Belg made. GRAHAM you out there. Put it in rev and spin prop or flywheel (key off) to verify its all the way in gear then try and lift engine."

"I fixed it. It needed a little cleaning etc. It works fine now. It does lock in neutral and reverse and unlocks in forward. Also, the motor does not need to be running for this function to work. Thanks for all your help. wjw

PS. I purposely left off the last 2 digits of my serial # for my motor. This comes from my time spent on firearms forums. Sorry if a confused you."

"Wm, even with the last 2 digi

"Wm, even with the last 2 digits missing, that is definately a 1985 - but listed (in my mess of paperwork) as a 35 horse serial, not a 25...."

"Sorry, took a closer look - if your last two digits are below "96" then it would make it a 1985 25 horse XD model.

(I'll get my lists computerized some day to make it easier)

"JB, I think they gave out tho

"JB, I think they gave out those 66xxxxx serials just before they converted over to the "new" serials (0Axxxxx) that they started late in 85.

I'm showing the 1985 25XD in the range 6593849-6626695 and then the 35 horse starting 6626696.."
