Motor temp.

how hot should the water be coming out of the pee hole on a 80 johnson 25? for some reason when i was idling towards the dock after a 10 min ride (5mph no wake) something told me to reach back and feel the stream coming out and it was way hotter than i tought it would be, it didnt burn me but after 1 sec i had to move my hand or it may have is this normal? i beleive my thermostat cover should be between 125 degrees and 163 degrees, so could i use a thermometer to take water temp or do i need to use the stick(125/163) on the cover?

A quick test is can you hold your hand on the head for a count of six if not it is getting too hot. You can put the t-stat in a pan of water and see if it opens I prefer my way and just put in a new stat. If you still have overheating issues and it is pumping water then there is restriction somewhere. Pull the thermostat housing off and start it and see if it gushes water is the check valve working properly only the head should get hot the water jacket around the cylinder should stay fairly cool even after running a long time. How much water is coming out of the prop when you first start it. Also how hot does the exhaust cover on the side of the engine get, water shoud free flow through it at first start and not get very hot either after running a while. I think the t-stat is 145 degrees measure the temp of the head itself.

when saying hold your hand on the head you mean below the thermostat correct? the water coming out of the pee hole is real close to 163 degrees. you said how much water is coming out of the prop, i wasnt aware wayer came out of the prop.
where is the water jacket? thanks.... 073 (640x480).jpg

There is just a wee bit of water coming out of the " pee hole " most of the cooling water goes out the prop with the exhaust.-------The " pee hole " can be blocked with weeds / mud / debris and the motor will run cool just the same.

then what is the purpose of the pee hole? ive read on here that if you do not have water coming out of the pee-hole then your motor is not getting water to flow through it to keep it cool and to not run it. how does the water flow through the prop when there is a gear head o ring? wouldnt all the gear oil leak out with the exaust? ive heard of through hub exaust but isnt that like on a 1 peice gearcase, mine is 2 peices with the skeg thats removable?

kimcrwbr1, i was gonna check head temp and exaust cover temp but when i started the motor i noticed my fuel pump was leaking. i removed it and disassembled it to check the gasket and when i looked at the schematic on here it did not show the pump coming apart like mine, it only showed a gasket where the pump mounts to the motor and mine had a gasket behind the gold plate that the filter cap screws into and another raincoat type material gasket on the back side of the pump( the top of it was off and there was a small spring with a lil plastic circle, also saw another spring with the circle thing behind the gold plate i mentioned above) .... is the pump not repairable?

OK on your motor the water comes out with the exhaust above the prop.------------These pee hole hoses plug up all the time and the motor will cool just fine.------In the old days folks used to maintain their water pumps and the pisser hose was not needed at all !!--------Most folks just do not know how it all works.

nowadays most folks do maintain their water pumps, myself included! change the impeller every 2-3 years....
you still did not tell me the purpose of the pee-hole, im sure OMC did not put it there to get a glass of water.....
obviously you know more about their motors than they do so tell me why OMC put something on their motors that was not needed, i really wanna know why.....

It is simply an indicater that people started asking for in the show rooms.---Competitors had it so they had to follow suit.-----------Folks started relying on it instead of changing impellers regularly.----They tell me it takes less than a minute for a motor like yours to sieze on complete water pump failure at full throttle, so how often do you look at the pisser when going full throttle ???????---Did a complete checkover on a 79 motor last week, just like your 80 model and owner said " thank you very much sir "-----------Picked up a 4 year old , 4 HP, 4 stroke Yamaha 2 weeks ago to possibly repair.-Beautiful looking motor too , but it suffered badly.---Severe overheat caused damage to the plastic cowlings and even the plastic dipstick melted.--Dealer said not worth fixing.--So not everybody knows how to maintain their motor waterpump.

thank you very much sir, that makes perfect sense. i actually do look back there pretty often but not every minute.
one more question.... my buddys evinrude(early 80's) takes 30 seconds or so before it starts pissing is this an indicator of the water pump/impeller going bad? i told him to change both but he does not seem too worried about it.
again thanks for the reply, ive always thought no pee was very bad and you cleared it up for me...thanks sir..

Tell him if it takes 30 seconds for water to come out it needs a new impeller right now.------Just picked up a 2002 --50 HP Johnson / Suzuki built 4 stroke ( severe , severe overheat ) for $100.00 just on the hope that it had a good crankshaft. -Also a 2000-130 HP Honda that apparently overheated.-------Folks just do not maintain their stuff and these new fangled 4 strokes with all the plastic on them really suffer.

funny how people spend their hard earned money on something and have no clue how it operates or dont take the time to read a owners manual, so yeah your right everybody dont, but they should...
