Motor or lower unit oil?

I have a '88 evinrude 40 VRO (deleted). It was serviced this spring with new plugs & lower unit lube. Mechanic said compression checked out. This boat has been in my family since day one and have had little to no issues other than regular maintenance.

Had it out last Sunday and rain just fine as usual. It has a little rough idle/trolling speed but never dies on me. Asked the mechanic to tune it up and he said that's just how it runs, it's old. Figured nothing of it.

On monday I found a small puddle of oil on the driveway and had quite a bit running down from behind the anode.

my question is, is this lower unit oil or semi-burnt motor oil? Seems to be the seal right where the lower unit connects to the exhaust case/mid section. 2nd question- is it still usable until repaired? The local shops don't carry parts for these old motors so it will take a while for repairs.

I will upload pictures once I get the computer

If your lower unit oil is OK then it is just unburned oil from the fuel and nothing to worry about.Check your compression and if that is OK you can tell your mechanic he's talking through his hat.I have a whole stable of motors at least 15 years older than that and they are all tuned to run like Rolexes,Believe me Old or not ,if all the little things are in good order(points, low and high speed adjustment if applicable and the carb is properly clean) there should be no problem.

If the lower unit oil turns up water, do not use it on the water. Any kind of introduction of water onto the gears and they may seize up, i learned the hard way
