Motor Only Runs On Hose...

My boat sits, with the occasional start, for about 4 months every year.
- Start and ran on hose for half hour or so everyday this week.
- Fired right up at launch and idled @2500 for about a 1/4 mile
- Slowly began to lose RPM until nothing
- Would turn over and run for a second before dying after it first died.

I got towed in, put her on trailer and over to the wash hose where I hooked it up and I be damned if she didn't stay on. I relaunched and the same thing happened. Paddled in, drove home and the motor has been running non-stop on the hose for over an hour. I have briefly taken it to 2500 RPM and it has stayed on.

I'm not really sure what to do from here?? Any ideas?

Motor is a 2004 Merc. Saltwater ELPTO

Clog somewhere in the fuel system.

It's getting enough gas to keep her running when there is absolutely no load at all, but once in the water just the resistance of the water on the prop and the extra back pressure (exhaust even trying to make it's way through the water) is too much for the super restricted gas flow to the motor to handle.

If this is a carbed model I would say clogged carbs would be the number one suspect - injected, could be clogged injectors.

In either case could be a bad gas pick-up, clogged filter, bad fuel pump (high or low pressure - again, depending on what motor you have - you gave the year but not the horsepower)

It's not simply overheating and shutting down (with a bad impeller)? The hose will provide the water where a bad impeller will not.
