Motor Just Quit ar WOT... Help

Running at 5500 rpm and everything was smooth, then it just died to idle speed. Cut out and fired back up twice before cutting out and not firing again. Thought I may be out of gas because my gauge went from half to pinned on E. Limped into a marina on the trolling motor got some gas and it fired up normal, went in reverse and then idle speed again moving forward.
Before this incident it had been "pausing" when I gave it throttle to get on plane. It never cut out, just a quick pause before getting going. 2004 Mercury ELPTO Saltwater

Here is the problem. But I don't know what caused it or how to go about fixing it so it doesn't happen again. Also, you can see in the second picture, it looks like the two pieces with white lines (looks like bent broken plastic) should be connected somehow. The smaller piece in on the left of picture just spins around on the tube its connected to. I reinserted the aluminum bar you see dangling and it seems to be getting gas fine now. Linkage broke loose. You could probably reconnect it using a snap lock washer but should replace the broken/missing part and retainer.

I did a search for the part using that terminology and nothing came up. Are the two pieces I referred to suppose to be connected? The two plastic pieces. Thanks!
 
I took those pics to a local Merc dealer and they sold me the grommets for the linkage. Apparently this is a common problem. Thanks for all your help!
